Fall is the best season to be doing home maintenance tasks, the most important of which is roofing inspections and maintenance. In today’s post, local roofing contractor Dynamic Roofing Concepts, Inc. shares roofing maintenance best practices for this season.

Keep Your Gutters Clean

Gutters are often considered separate from the roof, but damage to it can directly affect the roof they’re attached to. Clogged gutters, for example, do not just cause flooding on the ground. Water overflowing from the same gutters can also go the other way and cause damage to the roof deck when it infiltrates the roof edge. The long damage caused by moisture infiltration can result in significant damage that may go unnoticed until it forms roofing leaks. Keeping your gutters clean—a task ideally performed twice a year—can help prevent most of these issues.

Perform Roofing Inspections Regularly

Fall is the ideal season to perform roof inspections, which should be conducted regularly between scheduled maintenance appointments with your roofer. Regular inspections will help keep you up to date with your roof’s condition. It will also give you opportunities to have minor roofing problems fixed before they can develop into bigger (and costlier) ones.

All you need to conduct roofing inspections is a pair of binoculars and a notebook to write your notes on. Train your binoculars on the roofing surface and inspect every inch of it, top to bottom. Make a note of common roofing problems, such parts that may be missing, damaged or knocked loose. Also, take note of signs of aging such as curling and “bald” shingles. Your roofing contractor will then review these findings with you and help you come up with a repair and maintenance plan.

Trim the Trees Around Your Home

If you have trees in your yard, you have more than just dead leaves to worry about during fall. Tree branches may poke the roofing surface. If you have an asphalt shingle roof, this means the outer layer of granules can be scratched off, which can expose the asphalt-soaked backing material. If you have a metal roof, this can scratch off the outer paint layer and expose the bare metal layer to corrosion. Hanging tree branches can also give small animals access to your roof.

A 10-foot clearance should be enough to keep your roof safe from damage. If you are not sure how to trim the tree branches without causing harm to the tree, a local arborist can do it for you.
