Your roof is one of the most important parts of your home, but it’s also among the most vulnerable.  A properly installed roof will protect your home from different weather events, but it will also be the first to be affected by these conditions.  Understanding the effects of various weather elements on your system will help you avoid bigger and costlier repairs down the road.

Dynamic Roofing Concepts Inc., one of the leading providers of quality metal roofing in the region, shares the criteria that measure how well your system will be able to hold up against fire, hail storms, high winds, and freezing temperatures.

Fire Resistance

Roofs are typically classified into three fire-rating categories: Class A, Class B, and Class C. Class A ratings have the highest fire resistance. Unrated roofing materials mean they haven’t met basic classification requirements. Due to modern technology, many roofing materials today are rated Class A, except for some types of untreated wood shakes. These products can catch fire easily, but some wood shakes can also achieve a Class B rating when treated with fire retardants.

In areas prone to hailstorms, a hail-resistance rating is crucial. Roofing materials are rated from Class 1 up to 4, with Class 4 offering the strongest resistance against hail impact. Before making a purchase, be sure to consult your roofer about the hail resistance of their products and what they recommend according to your local area.

While the roof pitch and manner of installation play a key role in your system’s overall wind resistance, material options also have a say. Certain materials, such as metal, clay, and concrete tiles, can withstand strong winds of up to 180 mph.

When identifying how well they hold up against freezing temperatures, roofing materials are classified into three types: grades 1 to 3, with grade 1 providing the best resistance against frost.
