The Importance of Underlayment in Every Roofing System

Your roofing system is designed to keep your home sturdy and leak-free. That’s why its components are layered in such a way that water or moisture has difficulty finding its way inside. One of these important components is the underlayment, which no roofing system can do without.

Why Is the Roof Underlayment Important?

The asphalt shingles are the most visible part of any roofing system, and they also take the brunt of damage from inclement weather. They should be sufficient to keep rainwater out of your home, but that won’t always be the case. If the shingles have suffered damage, it’s more than likely that water and moisture will get past them. This is where the underlayment comes into play.

It’s the thin waterproofing material installed between the shingles and the roof decking. The roof underlayment is an added measure against water infiltration — the final barrier that moisture has to overcome before it can actually trickle into your home. The underlayment not only prevents leaks but also extends the life of your roof system. It makes this possible by preventing mold and rot from developing in the roof decking, which itself is a crucial part of the roof structure.

What Is the Roof Underlayment Made Of?

Given that the roof underlayment allows for a healthier, longer lasting roof, you’ll want to make sure that it’s made of an excellent material. Your top underlayment options may include these materials:

• Asphalt-Saturated. This used to be the go-to material for roof underlayment before synthetic choices entered the market. Still, asphalt-saturated remains a reliable option for a roof underlayment because it’s water-resistant, flexible and cost-effective.

• Synthetic. This option offers improved water-resistance and flexibility, while being only slightly costlier than asphalt-saturated. One prime example of this is the GAF® Deck-Armor™ Roof Deck Protection — a key part of the GAF Lifetime Roofing Systems offered by Dynamic Roofing Concepts, Inc. It sets itself apart from conventional synthetic underlayment thanks to breathable technology, which helps manage roof system moisture and provides additional protection against wind-driven rain.
