Many homeowners aren’t aware of the difference between closed and open roof valleys. A valley is where roof planes meet and is one of the most leak-prone areas of a roof. This part of your roof should be installed properly to prevent water from entering your interior.  Learn more about the two types of roof valley from a metal roofing expert.

Closed Valley

Roofers usually prefer closed valleys because they are more appealing and easier to install. This type of valley doesn’t need added materials and have shingles installed across the area where two planes meet. They are also more preferred by homeowners because of their cost-effectiveness. However, ice and water don’t shed as fast with a closed valley, which can contribute to increased shingle granule loss. The type, weight and thickness of the shingles can cause them to not lay flat across the roof joint.

Open Valley

In an open valley, a metal sheet is fastened to the roof at the joint. Roofing contractors install shingles to the roof and then cut and seal where they overlap the metal. This type of valley allows water and ice to shed faster, helping minimize granule loss and extend your roof’s lifespan.

When properly installed, an open valley can make your roof more appealing. It’s easier to repair in case it experiences problems. However, this type of valley can require added materials for installation, which can increase its cost.
